A: Tryouts begin on July 15 each year.
Q: What do players need to bring to tryouts?

Q: How long does the season last?
A: The season begins with tryouts on July 15. Summer practices start the day after tryouts and continue until school begins. The regular season begins the 2nd week in August and extends through September. The season ends for JV and Freshman team players at the end of regular season. Post-season play for Varsity can extend through State Finals in late October.
Q: What is Dead Period?
A: The KHSAA Dead Period is a 2 week period during which coaches are prohibited from communicating with players and their families. No team events can be held, optional or mandatory. Dead Period begins on 6/25 and extends through 7/9 each year. If you reach out to the coaches during Dead Period, you will not get a response. Either try again after Dead Period, or reach out the Booster Club at [email protected].
Q: How many days do tryouts last?
A: Tryouts typically last 2-3 days, beginning July 15. Additional tryout days may be scheduled in the case of rain-outs or if the coaching staff needs additional time to evaluate players. Players should plan to attend all tryout dates. If you are unable to come to tryouts, make arrangements beforehand with Coach Behler ([email protected]).
Q: What happens if I can't attend tryouts?
A: We ask that every player please be available for tryouts. The season is short, and once we get started things move very quickly. If you must miss tryouts, let Coach Behler know ahead of time so you can discuss your options. Players will not be placed on a team without being officially evaluated by the coaching staff, even if you are a returning player.
Q: Is it feasible for 7th or 8th graders to play for a club team in the fall and for the Henry Clay Freshman/JV-B?
A: 7th & 8th grade players are welcome to play Henry Clay soccer while also playing their fall club season. Coaches recognize that there will be scheduling conflicts and that players may miss some practices and games. Schedules sometimes work out okay, particularly if a player's club practices are on Tuesdays & Thursdays when Varsity & JV-A often have games. However, it is common for games to conflict. If you have questions or concerns, reach out to Coach Behler at [email protected].
Q: I am new to Henry Clay Soccer. Can I come to the optional June kickarounds?
A: Yes. June kickarounds are optional. You are welcome to attend some or all, as your schedule permits. On the first day you participate, you will need to turn in your completed KHSAA Consent & Physical form to Coach Behler. Without it, you will not be able to participate. (It is a KHSAA rule.)
Q: What does it cost to play?
A: A $25 fee for player insurance is required. Other outside costs for players include the cost of your Sports Physical, your cleats, and your shin guards. Players are asked to purchase socks and practice jerseys. If your financial circumstances make these purchases difficult or impossible, talk to Coach Behler. Financial assistance is available. There are no other required costs, but we do ask all players and families to participate in team fundraisers. Henry Clay Boys Soccer receives very minimal financial support from Fayette County Public Schools and is almost entirely self-funded. Our fundraisers pay for coaches' salaries, equipment, uniforms, referee costs, tournament fees, team events, awards, and travel expenses for any program trips.
Q: Where can I get a sports physical?
A: Your regular, primary care physician can provide a sports physical. If time or appointment availability is an issue, The Little Clinic at Kroger offers $29 (as of June 2023) sports physicals on a walk-in basis. The closest Little Clinic to Henry Clay is at the Kroger Marketplace at 3101 Richmond Rd. Click here for other free and low-cost options for sports physicals (and other medical services).
Q: Once the season starts, when will teams practice?
A: After school starts, Varsity typically practices 5 days a week M-F. JV teams typically practice 4 days a week M-Th. The JV-B Team will not practice when JV-A Team has a game and vice-versa. Practice lasts an hour and a half to 2 hours. Practice generally starts at 5:30pm. Varsity practices may be held right after school instead of in the evenings. The game schedule is heavy enough once school starts that practice is often held only 1-2 times per week.
Q: Which days are game days?
A: See the most current game schedule. Varsity and JV-A games are typically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Saturdays. Most JV-B team games will be on Sundays. The JV-B team schedule is typically set after tryouts, once it is known which other schools will field a 3rd team. Weekday JV-B games will seldom be on the same day as a weekday Varsity/JV-A game.
